AI Agents Use Way More Electricity Than You Think

Climate researcher Zeke Hausfather tracked his recent AI usage for two months. He found that his automated agent tasks consumed 170 kilowatt hours of electricity. This is a massive amount of power for a single user.
When broken down, each agent task uses about 600 times more energy than a standard chat message. This happens because agents perform complex, repetitive steps instead of just giving a single answer. They work much harder behind the scenes.
Companies often show us low energy numbers based on simple chat queries. These new findings suggest those reports do not tell the whole story. We need to be honest about the true environmental cost of advanced AI tools.
