AI is now the biggest user of AI

AI agents are now outperforming humans in total usage on the OpenRouter platform. Since early February, the amount of data processed by these automated bots has jumped 14 times. Human usage is also growing, but at a much slower rate.
Most of this activity comes from the agents reusing cached information. Because they do not need to generate new data for every task, the cost of running these agents stays relatively low. This explains why the raw volume of work is spiking without prices skyrocketing.
This shift shows that AI is becoming the primary customer for its own technology. As agents get better at working independently, we will likely see them handle even more repetitive tasks. The future of the industry seems to be machines talking to other machines.
