Should AI make medical decisions without a doctor?

A recent opinion piece in JAMA argues that AI will soon be better than doctors at diagnosing and treating patients. The authors suggest that requiring a human to review every AI decision could actually lower the quality of care.

They warn regulators against making human oversight a legal requirement. They believe that if a machine proves to be more accurate, it should be allowed to work on its own.

However, the authors admit that most current evidence comes from tests rather than real hospital settings. We still need more data from actual patient care before we remove doctors from the decision process.
